Indian government revises Electricity Law which is expected to achieve renewable energy goals
May 07, 2020

According to media reports, the Indian government has proposed an amendment to the Electricity Law that requires the implementation of the Hydropower Purchase Obligation (HPO). If implemented, this new revision will require electricity retailers to purchase a minimum percentage of their electricity demand from hydropower projects.

Another reason for the reclassification is that it will have a direct impact on India's renewable energy and PV mounting project development trajectory. India has promised to have 175 GW of renewable energy power generation capacity by December 2021. As of March 31, 2020, India ’s renewable energy generation capacity has just exceeded 88 GW, excluding large hydropower projects. If large hydropower projects are added to this list, India ’s renewable energy capacity will increase to more than 133 GW, which is expected to make the previously unreachable 175 GW target possible.
