Are Stainless Steel Cable Ties Stronger Than Plastic?

Are Stainless Steel Cable Ties Stronger Than Plastic?
Jul 25 , 2025

Cable ties are essential components in a variety of electrical, architectural, and solar installation applications. While plastic (usually nylon) cable ties are popular for their affordability and ease of installation, stainless steel cable ties are becoming increasingly popular for harsh environments. But are they really stronger than plastic ties?

The answer is yes—stainless steel cable ties are significantly better than plastic ties in terms of tensile strength, high temperature resistance, and durability in extreme conditions.

Tensile Strength and Load Capacity

Stainless steel cable ties have a much higher load capacity than plastic ties. While a standard nylon tie may have a tensile strength of 18 to 120 pounds (depending on its size), stainless steel ties can have a tensile strength of over 250 pounds. This makes them a top choice for securing heavy cables, pipes, or equipment, especially in solar installations, automotive wiring, and industrial HVAC systems.

Cable management is critical in solar photovoltaic (PV) installation systems. Loose or damaged cables can affect system performance or pose a safety risk. Installers using SIC solar racking systems often choose stainless steel ties when dealing with large or open-air installations where wind loads and UV exposure need to be considered.

High Temperature and UV Resistance

Plastic ties, especially nylon 6/6, begin to lose strength at high temperatures and become brittle over time, especially when exposed to UV light. Nylon ties typically work effectively in temperatures between -40°C and +85°C, but their service life may be shortened in severe weather.

Stainless steel ties, on the other hand, can withstand temperatures from -80°C to over +500°C, depending on the grade of the stainless steel tie. They are not affected by UV radiation and are fire resistant, which makes them ideal for use in solar fields in desert or coastal areas with high temperatures and direct sunlight.

Environmental Durability

Stainless steel ties perform far better than plastic ties in corrosive or high humidity environments. Marine environments, chemical plants, and industrial rooftops are all areas where plastic ties can degrade quickly. Stainless steel cable ties, especially 316 grade stainless steel cable ties, are rust and corrosion resistant and will remain intact even after years of use.

SIC Solar is a solar mounting hardware supplier that understands the long-term needs of outdoor photovoltaic systems. In some of their ground-mounted and rooftop solar projects, stainless steel cable ties are recommended for securing wires to tracks or module frames, especially when maintenance-free performance is a key goal.

Security and Tamper Resistance

For applications that require theft or tamper resistance, such as commercial solar farms or public infrastructure, stainless steel cable ties provide additional protection. Once locked, they cannot be removed unless cut, making them safer than reusable plastic cable ties.

Installation Considerations

It is important to note that stainless steel cable ties often require special tensioning and cutting tools for proper installation. Unlike plastic cable ties that can be pulled by hand, metal cable ties must be precisely fastened to prevent over-tightening or injury. Despite the extra effort, the end result is a highly secure, professional cable management system.
